On September 29, 2022, the second-year Humanist brothers went to the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. After looking through the pages of the art textbook, the brothers were able to see first hand and reflect on paintings, sculptures, and drawings to complement the art class given by Ms. Louise Joyner, M.A., M.A.M., Professor of Art at the Legionaries of Christ College of Humanities. They found many famous artworks.
Br. Oscar Jauregui, LC, found the Virgin and Child with Saint John the Baptist, a painting by Sandro Botticelli. Br. Oscar enthusiastically shared his impressions of the painting: “Wow! was my first impression – I knew it was a Botticelli! I was fascinated. I spent several minutes looking carefully at this work, and I’m still impressed by such a beautiful painting and that I was seeing it with my own eyes!”
Br. Alejandro Medina, LC, found an amazing Egyptian sculpture, The King Menkaura (Mycerinus) and queen. His impression was: “I thought the sculpture was going to be larger and big, yet when I saw it, I found out it was not what I had imagined. Nevertheless, this masterwork made me realize our desire to transcend and to be remembered.”
“Definitely, it was an incredible day at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston,” added Br. Gabriel Alberti, LC.
On October 18, 2022, the brothers drove down to New York City to the MET Museum. There the brothers could visit a gigantic collection of artworks in the iconic and biggest museum in the United States!
Br. Santiago Canton, LC, was lucky and found the very famous Study of a Young Woman. “I was really amazed by this painting; I could feel her looking at me.”
Br. Erick Mejia, LC, reflected on El Greco’s Christ Carrying the Cross, “I was very happy contemplating this painting that reflects really well the calm and serenity that Christ experienced during his Passion.”
At the end of their visit, the brothers went to the MET Cloister Museum and visited some artworks there.
Finally, Ms. Louise Joyner remarked, “There is no better way to contemplate some of the masterpieces that the brothers see in my class than to visit the nearby art museums, which we are blessed to be able to visit.“
