On October 9
th, 2017, the second year humanities students spent the day in Boston at the
Museum of Fine Arts. They take frequent trips to museums to see firsthand what they are studying in class.
There is nothing like a good art museum where the air is scholarly, the objects are old and the art is real. The Boston museum is the fourth largest museum in the United States and contains more than 450,000 works of art, making it one of the most comprehensive collections in the Americas.
We saw art from over 4,000 years ago right up to the 21
st century. We arrived to the museum around mid-morning and started off on our adventure. In the morning we divided up into two groups to go with our teachers through Egyptian, Greek, and Roman art.
In the afternoon we broke up into teams of three or four brothers to tour the rest of the museum. We spent most of our time in the European art section. One of the most discussed paintings was Frans Francken’s The
Choice Between Virtue and Vice.
This painting was so discussed because it is so relevant to our lives. We all experience the enticements of sin and many times fall, even though we know what is right. The man in the upper right hand side is in this dilemma. Which way would you choose?
It was a great day even if our feet did not agree.
