On Thursday, February 14, the Humanities community paid a visit to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, located on Fifth Avenue in New York City. For many brothers, this was their first visit to the world-renowned arts museum. The second-year brothers spent the day in small groups, touring their favorite parts of the museum and spending time at the exhibits they found most intriguing. The first-year brothers spent the morning in guided tours led by three of our professors here at the College: Mr. Baltazar Lopez, who led the brothers through Egyptian Art, Dr. Charles Mercier, who gave an exposition on Greek and Roman Art, and Mrs. Louise Joyner, who focused on Medieval and Byzantine Art. After lunch in Central Park, the brothers returned to the Museum, where the first-years split up into small groups to take a more personal look at the MET. Reflecting on his visit to the Museum, Br. Octavio Ortiz said: “I learned a lot more about the human person when we visited the MET – not just through the beautiful sculptures and paintings, but through the people I saw who were viewing the art. I saw how art is an expression of self, and that it has the power to connect others, across time and cultures, through the communication of beauty and truth.”
