A myth was retold. On March 1
st, Dr. Michael Sloan, PhD, Professor of Classical Languages at Wake Forest University, N.C., led a Cheshire Lecture based on the Greek tragedy
Bacchae by Euripides.
However, on this occasion, Dr. Sloan not only explained the play and its different components, but he also shared a different way to look at the same story.
He explained the circumstances and context of the play in the Greek world, and the manner in which it was received and presented in Athens. Afterwards, he offered a different manner to look at and understand the myth, and the way in which he draws those conclusions.
This was an excellent opportunity for us to learn how to evangelize culture by using themes that had been always present in art and shaping the mindset of different generations. Dr. Sloan not only shed some light on the
Bacchae for us, but he also taught us how we could do the same for any of the great works of antiquity in order to convey lessons from those perennial works that are still present in our society.
