The Aeneid was the topic for the last Cheshire Lecture this academic year. Dr. Kathleen Marks of New York addressed Aeneas’s relationship, or “marriage” with Dido, the queen of Carthage. Dr. Marks made a beautiful explanation of Chapter IV analyzing the main characters of Dido and Aeneas. She spoke at length about the importance of literature as a tool for teaching, which she pointed out to be a major goal of Virgil in writing the
Aeneid.
